Energizing the Heartland: Puma Energy Zimbabwe Launches Landmark Solar-Powered Station in Mhandamabwe
By: David Manema | Senior Correspondent
In a move that signals a decisive shift toward decentralized energy access, Puma Energy Zimbabwe has officially commissioned its first-ever rural solar-powered retail service station at the Mhandamabwe Business Centre in Chivi. This landmark project, delivered in partnership with Mhuri Properties, stands as a testament to the "Green Chimurenga"—the drive for energy independence in Zimbabwe’s underserved regions.
By integrating solar power into the core of rural retail, Puma Energy and Sona Solar Zimbabwe are proving that sustainable development is not just an urban luxury, but a rural necessity.
A Blueprint for Rural Energy
Strategically situated at the vital intersection of the Bulawayo-Masvingo and Beitbridge-Gweru highways, the Mhandamabwe station serves as more than just a refueling stop. It is a critical node linking Zimbabwe to the South African and Mozambican markets.
Unlocking Rural Economies
Deputy Minister of Energy and Power Development, Yeukai Simbanegavi, noted that such infrastructure is the key to unlocking rural potential. By placing high-quality fuel and lubricants at this junction, trade fluidly increases between our borders.
This station represents a shift toward energy sovereignty. By utilizing solar power, Puma Energy reduces its reliance on the traditional grid, ensuring that service remains uninterrupted even in the most remote areas.
A Sustainable Model
“Today marks not just an opening, but our commitment to energizing communities,” said Patrick Ngugi, Puma Energy GM. Inline with Sona Solar Zimbabwe’s mission, this project showcases how green energy can power heavy-duty retail and essential transport sectors.
The facility provides immediate economic benefits to the Chivi community, including seven permanent jobs and a modern Express Shop outlet to serve local travelers and residents.
Modern Retail Experience
The Express Shop features a loyalty programme where clients can redeem points for fuel. This brings a high-street retail experience to a rural setting, bridging the urban-rural divide through Mhuri Properties' visionary partnership.
Coming Soon: LPG Services
To further support the community’s energy needs and combat deforestation, the station will soon introduce Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) services, providing a clean alternative for domestic cooking.
The David Manema Verdict
Rural development is no longer a promise; it is being built in brick, mortar, and solar panels.
Scaling for the Future
As Ben Outtara, Puma Head of Africa, noted—impact matters more than scale. By expanding rural infrastructure, enabling trade, and supporting industries, Zimbabwe is securing its place as a regional leader. This Mhandamabwe station is the first of many landmarks in our journey toward total energy independence.
