Swallow Your Pride or Swallow Your Hunger

The Degree Doesn't Feed: Wake Up and Use Your Hands

A Message from David Manema to the dreamers waiting for a door to open while they hold the key in their own hands.

Swallow Your Pride or Swallow Your Hunger

1. Stop Waiting for a Rescue

I see you. You’ve been sitting on that sofa for months, maybe years, refreshing your email and crying that "there are no jobs." You are waiting for a HR manager to validate your existence. But while you wait for a miracle, your life is passing you by.

Listen closely: having a degree but no movement is like having a car with no fuel. It looks good in the driveway, but it’s not taking you anywhere. You have two hands, two legs, and a working brain. That is your initial capital.

"God helps those who help themselves." God doesn't visit the house of the person who refuses to walk to the gate. He meets you on the road while you are working.

2. The Story That Changed My Mind

One afternoon, I came across a man who couldn't use his legs. My first instinct was pity—until I saw his eyes. He wasn't looking for a handout; he was looking for customers. He had managed to set up a small table with neatly arranged tomatoes and bananas.

He was sweating, he was struggling, but he was trading. He understood something the "able-bodied" youth forget: A small profit is better than a large excuse. If a man who cannot walk can find a way to sell, how can you—with all your strength—say you are stuck?

3. The Degree vs. The Bills

I hear the ego talking: "I studied Human Resources, I can't be seen selling on the street." Or "I am an Accountant, I can't do a cleaning job."

Let’s be real. In Africa, the road to a corporate desk is often blocked by "links," nepotism, and "who-you-know." If you don't have a CEO uncle, you might grow old waiting for your "perfect" fit. Meanwhile, the bills are not waiting. The hunger is not waiting. Responsibilities are knocking on your door.

Swallow your pride. If the only door open is a cleaning job, grab the mop and be the best cleaner they’ve ever seen. Your degree is a tool for your future, but your hustle is the fuel for your present.

4. The Genesis of an Empire

We often think business starts with a suit, an investor, and a big office in the CBD. That’s a lie. Business is a solved problem.

Look at the giants of industry. They didn't start with mahogany desks. Think of companies like Econet—it didn't start as a multi-billion dollar network. It started with a man, a laptop, and a stubborn belief that refused to die even when the government said no. He didn't wait for perfect conditions; he created them.

You can start vending today. Whether it's juice cards, tomatoes, or a service. If money was the only requirement for success, ATMs would be the most successful entrepreneurs in the world. They have the cash, but they don't have the ideas, grit, or consistency.

5. The David Manema Challenge

My message to you is simple: Rise. Look at what is in your hands right now and put it to work. Success doesn't come to those who wait; it comes to those who are too busy working to notice the wait.

  • Swallow the pride: No honest work is beneath you.
  • Kill the excuses: If a crippled man can vend, you can move.
  • Consistency is King: Selling one banana today is the first step to owning the plantation.

Start Today, Thank Me Later

The "dream job" might be a year away, but your survival is happening right now. Don't grow old waiting for a link. Become the link. Start your own thing, work with your hands, and watch how the universe opens doors for a person who is already moving. Rise and grind—you'll thank me later.
