The Poverty of Thought: Defending the Desecration of Symbols is a Betrayal of Principle

By: David Manema

It is a spectacle that should move any thinking person to a state of profound revulsion. As a video of an Israeli soldier destroying a statue of Jesus Christ goes viral, a wave of African "Christians" have rushed to defend the act under the banner of "idolatry." This reaction exposes a staggering lack of critical thinking and a confused understanding of faith.

Desecration of Symbols Discourse
"A statue is not an idol; it is an expression of belief. To confuse the two is to abandon common sense for blind indoctrination."

Genuine Christians understand that symbols matter. They are expressions of remembrance and reverence, not objects of worship. Confusing a photograph for the person it represents is a failure of logic.

Deconstructing the Defense of Desecration

Across the world, statues of Jesus Christ exist as symbols of faith. No serious Christian doctrine teaches that a stone or wooden statue is God. It represents Christ, just as a photograph represents a loved one.

Symbol vs. Object

You do not worship the photograph; you honour what it stands for. Those who shout "idolatry" are not displaying theological depth; they are exposing a shallow understanding of their own faith.

It is baffling that some Africans defend these acts while the Israeli leadership itself has issued apologies for similar incidents. Global citizens understand that desecration inflames tensions and disrespects beliefs.

A Question of Principle

Why are some so eager to defend power rather than defend principle? This contrast between global revulsion and local defense says a great deal about the quality of thought currently prevalent on our continent.

When you see a statue of a national hero at Heroes Acre or an icon like Joshua Nkomo, no one kneels in worship. It is there to inspire future generations and honour a legacy. The same applies to statues of Christ.

The Legacy Analogy

If a family keeps a portrait of their late patriarch to remember his life and values, they aren't worshipping the frame. They are preserving a legacy. It is embarrassing to see adults fail to grasp this basic, common-sense distinction.

The David Manema Verdict

A faith that cannot distinguish between a monument of remembrance and an object of worship is a faith that has lost its way.

A Call to Critical Thinking

We must stop repeating slogans and begin using our minds. Defending the desecration of a symbol associated with Christ is not an act of faith; it is an act of intellectual surrender. Educated, genuine Christians recognize that respect for symbols is a hallmark of a civilized mind.

Demand Intellectual Depth

Stand for Principle, Not Blind Allegiance.
