Manama Mission Hospital Goes Green: A 40KW Boost for Life-Saving Services

Solar Surgery: 40KW Plant Breathes Life Into Manama Mission Hospital

The dawn of clinical continuity has arrived in Gwanda South. David Manema explores how Sona Solar Zimbabwe’s vision for energy independence is transforming rural healthcare.

40KW Solar Plant for Manama Mission Hospital: Reopening Mortuary and Ending Power Cuts

“We can now function at full capacity. No more transferring caesarean section patients due to power blackouts.” — Dr. Solomon Madondo, Medical Superintendent

Technological Restoration

In a significant boost for Matabeleland South, a 40KW solar plant—donated by the UNDP—has been commissioned at Manama Mission Hospital. This facility, managed by the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELCZ), serves a massive catchment area including Kezi and Beitbridge districts. After years of relying on inadequate generators, the hospital now has the 24/7 power required for modern medicine.

Operational Shift: Reliable energy is the backbone of the hospital’s recently refurbished theatre, ending the era of emergency transfers to Gwanda Provincial Hospital.

Impact on Patient Outcomes

The solar injection enables the full functionality of three mission-critical departments:

  • Maternity & Theatre: Safe delivery and surgical procedures can now proceed without fear of blackouts.
  • Pharmacy: Stable refrigeration ensures the integrity of life-saving medicines and vaccines.
  • Mortuary: Reopening of a non-operational facility, removing the financial burden of private services from local families.

Bishop Dr. Michael Dube noted: “We have to appreciate the critical role of reliable energy in healthcare. Solar project demonstrates how strategic partnerships improve lives.”

Alignment with NDS2

Deputy Minister Dr. Omphile Marupi highlighted that the solarisation of Manama aligns perfectly with the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2). By tapping into Zimbabwe's abundant solar irradiation, the government and its partners are building the infrastructure required for an upper-middle-income economy by 2030.

Infrastructure development is not just about buildings; it is about the uninterruptible systems that keep those buildings alive.

The David Manema Verdict

At Sona Solar Zimbabwe, we champion the "Sovereign Hospital" model. Manama Mission is no longer a victim of grid instability; it is now a generator of health. This is the ultimate expression of Energy Justice.

A hospital without power is a building. A hospital with solar is a Sanctuary. We salute the UNDP and ELCZ for this strategic victory.
