The Architecture of SI 235
Zimbabwe has solidified its position as a regional leader in solar adoption through the enforcement of Statutory Instrument 235 of 2019. This regulation mandates the installation of solar water heating systems for all new buildings, effectively phasing out conventional electric geysers.
Deputy Minister Yeukai Simbanegavi highlighted that through the adoption of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (Meps), the nation is successfully retrofitting major hospitals with LED systems and solar geysers, drastically reducing industrial load profiles.
Academic & Industry Synergy
The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has been the implementation partner for the Soltrain Initiative for over 13 years. Vice-Chancellor Professor Mqhele Dlodlo emphasized that NUST is embedding Artificial Intelligence (AI) into solar thermal research to optimize system designs and facilitate smart grid integration.
NUST is now moving toward large-scale deployment with the establishment of a 5 MW Solar PV Farm at its Bulawayo campus, serving as a blueprint for institutional energy independence.
Human Capital & Grid Resilience
The transition to a solar-first economy requires elite human capital. NUST has successfully capacitated over 800 Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) technicians with advanced expertise in electrification and solar management. This workforce ensures that Zimbabwe’s renewable energy infrastructure meets global safety and efficiency standards.
From the Built Environment to Applied Sciences, NUST is equipping a new generation of engineers to lead in Net Zero Building designs, a mission that Sona Solar Zimbabwe actively champions in every project we undertake.
The Sona Solar Strategy
As Zimbabwe leads solar adoption in the SADC region, Sona Solar Zimbabwe remains the premier implementation partner. We leverage the research from NUST and the policy framework of ZERA to provide high-authority energy solutions.
- Industrial Efficiency: Following the Soltrain model for heating and cooling.
- Residential Sovereignty: 6.2 kVA systems engineered for 24/7 reliability.
- National Impact: Every roof we power brings Zimbabwe closer to the 27% non-hydro renewable target.
