TRAIL OF DEVASTATION: Uprooted trees, shattered structures, and exposed interiors paint a grim picture in Masvingo following Monday evening's violent hailstorm and flash floods.
Emergency Shelters Activated by City Authorities With over 60 households directly affected and left exposed to the elements, the Masvingo City Council has officially opened Mucheke Hall and Rujeko Hall to provide temporary shelter and safe storage for displaced families.

Described by locals as one of the worst weather events to hit the historic town in years, the storm struck abruptly on Monday evening, bringing heavy downpours, blinding flash floods, and colossal chunks of ice that battered private and public infrastructure.

An "Apocalyptic" Monday Evening: How the Storm Struck

What began as late afternoon overcast skies quickly escalated into a ferocious atmospheric onslaught just after 5:00 PM on Monday.

Residents across Masvingo urban and surrounding residential areas like Rujeko and Ipisham watched in disbelief as towering thunderclouds unleashed torrential rain coupled with unusually large hailstones. The ice blocks hammered corrugated iron roofs with deafening force, shattering window panes and allowing torrents of rainwater to flood residential houses and commercial storefronts.

Power Outages and Blocked Thoroughfares Powerful gales uprooted mature trees across major roads and residential properties, bringing down power lines that triggered extensive electricity blackouts throughout the city and leaving commuters stranded.

A Trail of Destruction: Vehicles, Homes, and Businesses

As daylight broke this morning, the true scale of the disaster became painfully evident as community members emerged to assess the wreckage.

Vehicles Smashed and Dent-Riddled Countless vehicles parked outdoors or caught on the roads—including private cars and corporate utility trucks—suffered severe damage, with shattered windscreens, caved-in roofs, and badly dented body panels from the heavy ice impact.
Commercial and Residential Roofs Blown Off Supermarkets, furniture showrooms, and scores of residential buildings had their roofing sheets ripped off or windows smashed, scattering broken glass across pavements and leaving interior fittings waterlogged.

Authorities Mobilize: Mayor and CPU Respond

Masvingo Mayor Councillor Aleck Tabe expressed profound distress over the catastrophe, confirming that initial assessments point to over 60 households bearing the brunt of the destruction.

“The extent of the damage is significant and deeply distressing. Most concerning is that several families have been left with their homes exposed to the elements,” Mayor Tabe stated.

Civil Protection Unit (CPU) Chief Director Nathan Nkomo also confirmed the scale of the emergency, noting that while property destruction is massive, miraculous early reports indicate no fatalities or severe human injuries. Joint teams from the City Council and provincial disaster units remain on the ground conducting rigorous damage verifications.

Emergency Shelters Open for Displaced Families

Mucheke and Rujeko Halls Ready To accommodate citizens whose homes were rendered uninhabitable, municipal authorities have opened Mucheke Hall and Rujeko Hall. These centers are currently serving as temporary havens, offering safe shelter and secure spaces to store salvaged household belongings.

As humanitarian assessments continue and vulnerable community members receive urgent support, the disaster serves as a stark reminder of escalating severe weather patterns heading into the rainy season.
