A rift inside one of Zimbabwe's most storied musical camps has spilled out of the studio and onto a High Court docket. Blessing Vava, who once worked as publicist for Thomas "Mukanya" Mapfumo's Blacks Unlimited outfit, is demanding US$50,000 in damages from the Chimurenga icon and his band manager, Cuthbert Chiromo, over remarks he says branded him a thief, a manipulator, and a man driven by witchcraft.

Court papers lodged at the High Court name Vava as plaintiff, with Mapfumo cited as first defendant and Chiromo as second defendant — a striking role reversal for a man once tasked with protecting the band's public image.

The Plaintiff: Blessing Vava A former publicist for Blacks Unlimited, Vava is pursuing the claim through his lawyers, Tavenhave Machingauta, arguing that his professional and personal standing has taken a direct hit.

The Defendants: Mapfumo & Chiromo Music legend Thomas Mapfumo and his band manager Cuthbert Chiromo are represented by lawyer Charles Warara, and have already filed a notice of appearance to defend the matter.

The Ask: US$50,000 Vava's summons puts a figure on the reputational harm he says he suffered, citing the seriousness of accusations of theft and dishonesty as the basis for the amount claimed.

The Allegations: What Was Said, and Where

Two separate media appearances sit at the centre of the claim — a print interview and a podcast appearance — each amplified by the platforms that carried them.

The H-Metro Interview In August 2026, Mapfumo gave an interview to H-Metro in which he reportedly named Vava as one of the people he believed had turned Kurai Makore against him — a claim Vava's legal team says implied improper meddling in that relationship.

The Nehanda TV Podcast On a Nehanda TV podcast later shared on YouTube and heard by audiences both at home and abroad, Chiromo allegedly repeated the Makore claim and went further — describing Vava as a "witch" and accusing him of attending a funeral under false pretences while acting under a spirit of witchcraft.

The Social Media Claim Chiromo further alleged that Vava ran a network of hidden social media accounts designed to turn Mapfumo's own fans and supporters against him — an accusation Vava's lawyers reject outright, along with every other claim in the suit.

The Legal Path Ahead

Vava's team says the situation was made worse when a retraction deadline of 21 August 2026 came and went without any correction from the Mapfumo camp. With no retraction forthcoming, the summons proceeded, and a notice of appearance to defend has now been filed under case number HCH 4496/26.

What happens next:
• Pleadings close: Mapfumo and Chiromo, through Charles Warara, will file their formal defence to the claims.
• Evidence stage: Both sides will need to substantiate their versions of what was said, where, and what it meant.
• Presumption of innocence: Every allegation in Vava's summons remains just that — an allegation — until the High Court rules on the matter.

Reading It as a Reputation Story, Not Just a Legal One

When a Podcast Becomes a Liability Whatever the court eventually decides, the case is a reminder that a single podcast clip, once uploaded, travels far beyond the room it was recorded in — and can outlive the dispute that produced it.

For an artist whose brand has been built over five decades on moral authority as much as musicianship, an unresolved public feud with a former insider is not a footnote — it is a live reputational risk that will be watched as closely by fans as by lawyers.

Blessing Vava, for his part, is betting that the High Court will agree his name was dragged through claims of theft, manipulation and witchcraft without justification — and that a figure of Mapfumo's stature should answer for the words spoken in his name.
