From Postulant To Full Member
Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has been formally admitted as a full member of the Roman Catholic Church's Guild of St Joseph, completing a progression he had already begun by serving through the guild's first two stages. It's the kind of milestone that, for most members, unfolds quietly within the life of a parish — and this one was no different in spirit, even with a Vice President at its centre.
He didn't make the step alone. Five of his sons — Dr Kudzai Chiwenga, and Messrs Gamuchirai, Tawanda, Kudakwashe and Takudzwa Chiwenga — were admitted to full membership alongside him, turning what could have been a personal milestone into something the family marked together.
The Moment That Actually Made People Talk
What's drawn more attention than the membership itself is what came after it. In keeping with the guild's founding spirit of service, the Vice President took part in collecting tithes during the service — moving through the congregation with the offering basket like any other member of the parish.
A Simple Act, A Bigger Point
There's something worth sitting with in the image of a nation's Vice President walking pew to pew without an entourage, without any signal that he expected to be treated differently from the person seated next to him. Leadership isn't only what happens from a podium or an office — sometimes it's exactly this: showing up to do the unremarkable, necessary work alongside everyone else.
"A Huge Family Achievement"
Speaking after the service, his wife described the milestone in exactly those terms — a huge family achievement — and spoke of her husband as a man of strong and firm conviction, someone whose faith, in her telling, isn't separate from who he is day to day but part of the same person people see in every other setting.
For a family stepping into full membership together, five sons and a father completing the same stage on the same day, it's a moment that carries weight well beyond church attendance — it's a shared commitment, made publicly, side by side.
Humility Doesn't Ask Permission From Rank
Whatever one makes of the politics of the day, humility is worth recognising wherever it shows up. Before God, the argument goes, titles and ranks fall away — everyone in that congregation stood as equals seeking the same grace, basket in hand or seated in the pew.
True greatness was never about how many people serve you — it's about how willingly you're prepared to serve them. No position, it turns out, is ever too high to pick up a basket.
