The No Name Dance Crew: How Prince Chibansha is Putting Bulawayo Dance on the Map
Arts & Culture Reporter: David Manema
In the rapidly evolving world of Zimbabwean creative arts, Prince Chibansha—better known as Unofficial Prince—is proving that dance is more than just motion; it is a vital component of the national industry.
From his roots in Chinhoyi to leading the No Name Dance Crew in Bulawayo, Unofficial Prince has become a movement creative director whose influence reached its peak at the recent National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA).
The Rise of a Choreographic Powerhouse
Stepping onto the national stage in Harare was a moment of high pressure for the Bulawayo-based artist. Tasked with choreographing for the Namas, Prince had to bridge the gap between his home-turf confidence and the expectations of a national audience.
Mentorship & Growth
“I was nervous... I had to make sure I do my research on previous quality of performances,” he shared. Under the mentorship of creative director Ndomzy, Prince delivered a showing that proved he belongs among the elite.
Leading the Bulawayo-based “No Name Dance Crew,” Prince faces a unique challenge: the push for veteran dancers to step aside. However, at 28, he believes he is only just entering his prime.
Defying the "Retire" Comments
Despite voices saying “wena wagida kudala” (you have been in the game too long), Prince remains firm. “I’m at my peak now, this is the time to actually make money and perform a lot more,” he insists.
Looking forward, Unofficial Prince is not just focused on the next routine; he is looking at the infrastructure of the dance industry in Zimbabwe.
Monetizing the Talent
His dream is to establish a dance school that teaches both performance and monetization. He wants the next generation to understand how to turn passion into a steady cash flow and a sustainable business.
The Artistic Verdict
Zimbabwe's dance industry is safe in the hands of those who respect the craft and the coin.
A Leader in Movement
Unofficial Prince is a testament to the power of perseverance. By refusing to retire early and focusing on the business of art, he is setting a blueprint for dancers across the continent. His journey from Chinhoyi to the Namas is just the beginning.
