Rejecting the Hollywood Lens: China’s Call for a Zimbabwean Cinematic Revolution

GLOBAL MEDIA SEMINAR: BEIJING

Reclaiming the Lens: David Manema on China’s Urgent Call for Zimbabwe to Tell Its Own Truth Through Film

Exclusive Report By: David Manema

For too long, the story of Zimbabwe has been told through a "Western lens" of conflict and instability. In a landmark seminar in Beijing, China has issued a powerful challenge: It is time for Zimbabwe to tell its own story.

CULTURAL CONFIDENCE

"The measure of success is not how many people watch a film, but how many book a flight." — China Film Group

Rejecting the Western Lens

During the Media Seminar in Beijing, Jiayang Sangzhu, Director of Foreign Affairs at China Film Group, noted that global perceptions of Zimbabwe are often poisoned by Hollywood tropes.

Distorted Legitimate Image

Sangzhu argues that Western movies focus exclusively on political regime change, tribes, robbery, and terrorism. "That is not true about the current Africa. That is not true about the current Zimbabwe," he declared, urging Zimbabweans to strengthen their cultural confidence.

Cinema as an Economic Engine

The vision presented in Beijing moves beyond art; it treats film as an integrated system connecting culture, tourism, and real-world consumption.

The New Logic of Film

Success is no longer just viewership. If a film about Victoria Falls or Great Zimbabwe ignites a desire in a Chinese viewer to travel, the film has achieved its "ultimate success." Sangzhu pointed out that a properly executed film festival can fill hotels and restaurants more effectively than any slogan.

A Roadmap for Creators

For Zimbabwean filmmakers ready to "create together" with China, Sangzhu outlined clear diplomatic and professional pathways.

Direct Entry Points

Filmmakers can approach the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe for co-ordination or engage directly with the China Film Group. The current phase prioritizes cultural exchange over immediate profit, meaning authentic stories have a unique window of opportunity to reach Chinese audiences.

David Manema’s Take

The Call for Co-Creation

As David Manema notes, this is more than a suggestion—it is a strategic invitation. By moving from 'seeing each other' to 'creating together,' Zimbabwe can leverage China’s massive audience to transform its image and its economy. The resources are there; the channels are open. Now, our filmmakers must find the courage to tell the real story of our progress.
