The Scars of Silence: Breaking the Chains of Abuse Within the Church

A Word from: David Manema

Listen to me closely: Submission is not a suicide pact. Silence is not a spiritual virtue when your spirit is being crushed. Too often, the very walls meant to be a refuge—the Church—have become a prison of judgment, gossip, and forced smiles. It is time to stop sugar-coating the pain.

Sanctuary of Healing
"God draws near to the brokenhearted; His Church must not turn away."

To the sisters and brothers bleeding in secret: Your pain is seen. Your scars are valid. And your voice must be heard. Abuse is not a "marriage trial" to be endured; it is a sin to be confronted.

From Bondage to Deliverance

It is a disturbing truth that some of the most manipulative behaviors come from those active in the Church. When we keep quiet about Gender-Based Violence (GBV) because we fear "disrepute" to the Church’s name, we become complicit. The Church is meant to be a sanctuary of healing, not an entity where scars are concealed under a Sunday best.

The Cost of Complicity

Silence in the face of abuse is misconstrued as agreement. We must stop allowing gossip to replace pastoral care. Healing cannot begin where secrets are kept.

Proverbs 31:8-9 commands us: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, ensure justice for those being crushed.” If God draws near to the wounded (Psalm 34:18), the Church has no right to turn its back.

Zero Tolerance Policy

To the men of God who abuse their wives: To whom much is given, much is required. You are not above accountability. True love is a balance of roles rooted in God’s intent, not a hierarchy of harm.

If you are in a situation where you think there is "no coming back," hear this: Help is a decision away. The Church must step up and implement the following:

Survivor-Centred Support

  • Educate: Bring in experts to teach on the devastating impact of GBV.
  • Confidentiality: Train discreet counsellors who offer grace, not judgment.
  • Safe Spaces: Create support groups where pain is shared without ridicule.
  • Partnerships: Work with Zimbabwean NGOs that offer legal aid and shelters.

David Manema’s Final Thought

You were created for glory, not for bruises.

A Loving Appeal

Love can be beautiful, but abuse is a plague that must be eradicated. If you are sitting in silence, scarred and afraid, do not wait. Reach out. There is no "perfect time" to be free—there is only now. Let the Church be the hands and feet of Christ that catch you when you leap toward freedom.
