From Tragedy to Triumph: Chegutu’s Bold War on Drug Abuse

COMMUNITY RESILIENCE REPORT

Beyond the Shadow of Marabha: Chegutu’s Bold War on Drugs Through Youth Empowerment

Written by: David Manema

In Chegutu, the battle lines against drug and substance abuse are no longer just drawn in hospital wards or police stations—they are being drawn on the factory floors of the mind. In a town still haunted by the tragic memory of "Marabha," a new revolution is rising.

Youth Empowerment Chegutu
"Empowering 250+ youths in Chegutu Ward 4 to choose financial freedom over substance dependency."

The Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs in Zimbabwe (SCIAZ), in a powerful alliance with the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, has launched a high-impact Economic Resilience programme to replace the pipe with a paycheck.

Turning Pain into Purpose

Chegutu Ward 4 became the national epicenter of the drug crisis in 2024 following the horrific death of a man known as Marabha. In a state of drug-induced psychosis, Marabha allegedly mutilated himself, an act of desperation that shocked the nation and served as a wake-up call for the community.

Never Again

This tragedy wasn't just a medical failure; it was a societal alarm. It highlighted the terrifying reality of substance abuse and the urgent need for intervention that goes deeper than just words.

SCIAZ President, Sheikh Ishmail Duwa, and Provincial Minister Marian Chombo have identified the root cause of drug use: hopelessness and financial hardship. The solution? Economic Resilience and Internal Savings and Lending (ISAL) training.

Replacing Addiction with Ambition

By training 250 youths to manage money and start small businesses, the programme creates a sense of ownership. As Minister Chombo noted: "Financial empowerment is one of the strongest remedies against hopelessness."

My Take: We cannot arrest our way out of a drug crisis. A young person with a business to run and a future to protect is far less likely to pick up a drug than one who is idle and desperate.

The Power of Idle Hands

Poverty is the fuel for substance abuse. By partnering with faith-based organizations like SCIAZ, the government is tapping into community trust. This is the blueprint for Zimbabwe: Give the youth a bank account, and they will lose interest in the bottle.

The Chegutu Verdict

When a community stands together, the cycle of addiction is broken.

A New Dawn for the Youth

The 250 youths currently in training are the pioneers of a drug-free Chegutu. Their success in the ISAL schemes will be the ultimate tribute to those lost to addiction and a beacon of hope for the entire Mashonaland West province.
