Solar Sovereignty: RTG’s 2MW Power Move and the US$50 Million Revenue Surge.

The Rainbow Tourism Group (RTG) has officially announced its 2026 flagship project: a 2-Megawatt solar system to be installed at the iconic Rainbow Towers Hotel and Conference Centre. This isn't just an auxiliary system; it is a full-scale industrial infrastructure move intended to produce 2,942,838 kWh annually.

RTG Board Chairperson Douglas Hoto confirmed the system will be grid-tied, enabling the hotel to feed surplus energy back into the national grid, directly contributing to Zimbabwe's national energy resilience.

RTG’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles is integrated into every capital investment. The success of the 2MW project is grounded in the results of the Kadoma Hotel solar plant, which already slashed energy costs by 31%.

  • Green Stays Programme: Measurable reductions in energy, water, and chemicals.
  • Smart Resource Management: Low-flow flushing systems (30% water reduction) and smart key card room optimization.
  • Human Capital: An Employer Assisted Housing Scheme now benefiting 53% of the workforce.
"Sustainability is not a slogan at RTG; it is a practical, operational reality. From the 2MW plant to smart key cards, we are witnessing the engineering of a world-class hospitality brand." — David Manema.

RTG’s financial health provides the capital foundation for its solar ambitions. In 2025, the group recorded a 13% revenue rise to US$50.3 million, with total assets ballooning to US$82.7 million.

Strategic acquisitions including Montclair Hotel (Nyanga) and Batoka Safaris (Victoria Falls) have solidified RTG’s dominance in the regional conferencing and leisure markets.

As a technical strategist, David Manema identifies RTG’s 2MW move as the "Gold Standard" for Zimbabwean industry. High-authority energy means reducing the "Grid Risk" through decentralized production.

"When a giant like RTG invests in a 2MW grid-tied system, they are signalling that energy independence is the only way to safeguard a multi-million dollar portfolio. At Sona Solar Zimbabwe, we mirror this philosophy. Whether it is an international hotel or a private estate, we prioritize the high-efficiency components required to turn your roof into a revenue-generating asset." — David Manema.

RTG Chief Executive Tendai Madziwanyika noted that the move is a deliberate effort to reduce the company's carbon footprint while enhancing long-term operational efficiency.
