From the Savannah to the Sun: Malilangwe Trust’s 2MW Solar Bid Signals a New Era of Energy Independence
Published by: David Manema
As Zimbabwe marks 46 years of independence, a new kind of liberation is unfolding in the Lowveld. The Malilangwe Trust has officially applied to the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) for a licence to build and operate a 2MW solar plant at the Malilangwe Wildlife Estate in Chiredzi.
In alignment with the national shift toward renewable resilience, Sona Solar Zimbabwe views this move as a benchmark for private entities taking ownership of their power needs to ensure uninterrupted operations in critical sectors.
The Blueprint for Off-Grid Success
The application, filed under Section 46 of the Electricity Act [Chapter 13:19] (2002), seeks approval to construct, own, operate, and maintain a solar facility at Subdivision 1, Fair Range, Chiredzi. This isn't just about lights; it's about building a robust, self-sustaining infrastructure in the heart of Masvingo province.
Project Specs
The 2MW of power generated will be used exclusively on-site, integrated through the existing Chiredzi 11kV (33kV) feeder line. ZERA has opened a 14-day consultation period for stakeholders, closing on May 5, 2026.
Malilangwe Wildlife Estate is a world-class conservation area. By adopting a massive 2MW solar solution, the Trust ensures that its anti-poaching units, community development centers, and luxury ecotourism assets remain functional regardless of national grid stability.
Operational Resilience
Private entities are increasingly adopting embedded solar solutions to mitigate persistent power shortages. For Malilangwe, this means securing the future of Zimbabwe’s endangered species through guaranteed energy security.
Empowering Large-Scale Projects
As a leader in the renewable space, Sona Solar Zimbabwe recognizes the Malilangwe project as a vital indicator of where the nation is headed. Large-scale solar is no longer a luxury; it is the "Engine of Liberty" for Zimbabwean industry and conservation alike.
Technical Excellence
Whether it is a 2MW plant for a conservancy or a rooftop system for a home, Sona Solar Zimbabwe provides the expertise needed to navigate ZERA regulations and install world-class hardware that lasts for decades.
The 2026 Energy Verdict
A solar-powered Zimbabwe is a Zimbabwe that remains forever switched on.
A Message from David Manema
The Malilangwe Trust's move to 2MW solar is a testament to the fact that Zimbabwe is becoming a "renewing" nation. By harnessing the sun of the Lowveld, we are protecting our heritage and our future. This is what true independence looks like in 2026.
