Solar Mastery in Gweru: Inside the US$20M Project Set to Power Zimbabwe’s Future

The landscape of Gweru is undergoing a massive high-authority transformation. Construction is currently underway for the US$20 million Clover New Energy (Pvt) Ltd Solar Power Plant. This 20-megawatt facility is a signature outcome of the strategic partnership between Zimbabwe and China, aimed at industrial modernization.

Minister Owen Ncube, during a recent tour of the site, highlighted that the plant is expected to begin feeding the national grid by August 2026, with a wider 100MW captive power station following by the end of 2027.

As a technical strategist, David Manema identifies this project as a critical buffer for the Midlands heavy industrial site. Clover New Energy is a subsidiary of Jin An Group, which oversees massive ferrochrome smelting operations.

"The US$140 million broader investment by Jin An Group ensures that ferrochrome plants in Gweru will eventually operate at 100% capacity. This removes the pressure from the national grid (ZESA) and allows residential energy security to stabilize across the province." — David Manema.

By moving heavy industry to independent, captive power, Zimbabwe is effectively increasing its export production while reducing the environmental carbon footprint of its mining sector.

The Gweru project aligns with the NDS2 pillar of infrastructure development. Under the Second Republic, bold policy decisions—such as duty-free solar imports and the mandate for heavy industries to develop their own power supply by 2026—have created a fertile market for renewables.

Other signature projects noted by the Minister include:

  • 500MW Kariba Floating Solar Plant: A continental benchmark.
  • 10.8MW Munyati Solar Park: Reinforcing the Midlands power mix.
  • Rural Mini-Grids (Hwakwata & Dete): Bringing light to clinics, schools, and homesteads.

While Clover New Energy powers the giants, Sona Solar Zimbabwe powers the people. We mirror the industrial-grade excellence of the Gweru project for residential and commercial clients nationwide.

"High-authority energy means using the best tech. Just as Clover New Energy prioritizes safety and quality for the grid, Sona Solar Zimbabwe uses Tier 1 JA Solar panels and 6.2kVA Mastery systems to ensure your home or office never feels a blackout." — David Manema.

Whether you need a full off-grid solution or a net-metering setup to save costs, our engineering team provides the same level of precision as the US$20M plants powering our national industries.
