A New Era for Hwange
Mosi-Oa-Tunya Energy Centre (Private) Limited has officially submitted an application to the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA). The proposed plant, located at the Chidobe Matate Site in Hwange, aims to construct, own, and operate a utility-scale solar facility.
This project underscores the growing role of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in bridging the national electricity supply gap.
High-Voltage Engineering
Evacuating power is as critical as generating it. The project includes the construction of an approximately 75-kilometre Triple Bison line operating at 330kV. This line will connect the Mosi-Oa-Tunya Energy Centre Substation directly to the Hwange 330/88kV Substation.
Integrating solar into high-voltage transmission lines is essential for maintaining grid stability and ensuring efficient power delivery to demand centers.
The Path to 2030
This 25MW facility aligns perfectly with Zimbabwe’s broader energy reform agenda. By diversifying the energy mix and cutting carbon emissions, the nation moves closer to its goal of upper-middle-income economy status by 2030.
Hwange continues to be the focal point of national energy investment, blending traditional thermal power with modern renewable initiatives.
Public Participation
In accordance with Section 46 of the Electricity Act, ZERA has invited the public to make representations regarding this application. The window for submissions remains open until 19 March 2026.
At Sona Solar Zimbabwe, we champion these large-scale developments as they build the foundation for a sustainable future. David Manema notes: "Strategic energy growth is the bedrock of economic scaling."
