Harare to Bulawayo for $25: Zimbabwe’s Electric Shock!

The $25 Revolution: Green Mobility Rolls Into Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is leapfrogging the fossil fuel era. With CMED's fleet of 44+ electric vehicles, the country has officially entered the age of sustainable, hyper-affordable transport.

The $25 Revolution: Zimbabwe’s Electric Takeover

A Technological Giant Awakens

At the SADC Sustainable Energy Week in Victoria Falls, the Central Mechanical and Equipment Department (CMED) unveiled a cutting-edge fleet of 44+ electric vehicles. The exhibition, toured by VP Dr. Constantino Chiwenga and VP Kembo Mohadi, showcased Zimbabwe's rapid renewable energy adoption.

The fleet includes light motor vehicles, commuter omnibuses (kombis), and luxury coaches already operational in tourist hubs like Victoria Falls.

The $25 Game-Changer

The most striking revelation: An electric bus can travel 400 kilometres (the distance from Harare to Bulawayo) on a full charge costing just US$25. This represents a staggering reduction in operational costs compared to diesel-guzzling alternatives.

Zero noise, zero fuel, and speeds of up to 140km/h — the economic argument for fossil fuels is officially over.

Solar-Powered Transit

CMED showcased a 22-seater mini-bus compatible with modest solar setups. Using a 13kV solar battery supported by just two 65-watt solar panels, these vehicles can remain operational for up to 600km per charge cycle.

"The only 'drink' this car needs is water for your air conditioning," says CMED's Morgan Kagande. No fuel, no oil changes, no mechanical complexity.

Building the Ecosystem

CMED isn't just importing; they are building. The strategy includes establishing rapid-charging stations across major cities and moving toward local assembly of these vehicles to drive down costs further and create green jobs.

From airport transfers to school runs, Zimbabwe's EV infrastructure is being built to withstand the demands of a modern economy.

A Green Strategic Vision

By leveraging lithium reserves and high solar radiation, Zimbabwe is positioning itself as the green mobility hub of Southern Africa. This transition ensures a sustainable, silent, and affordable future for every Zimbabwean commuter.

NAMA roars back, and so does Zimbabwe's transport industry — louder, brighter, and unapologetically electric.
