The events leading to the conviction began on February 2, 2024. Police officers on duty intercepted Gonzara after he bypassed a red traffic light at the busy Mupedzanhamo intersection while driving a Mercedes Benz.
A routine traffic stop quickly escalated into a criminal investigation when officers conducted a search of the vehicle. Authorities recovered a stash of prohibited substances, including mbanje (cannabis) and Broncleer syrup.
The drugs were subsequently forfeited to the State as evidence of the musician's violation of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
Gonzara faced multiple charges, resulting in a combination of custodial sentences and monetary fines. The court's ruling was as follows:
- Traffic Violation (Red Light): 10 months in prison (2 months suspended), leaving an effective 8-month custodial sentence.
- Driving Without a License: US$100 fine (or 30 days in jail).
- Possession of Mbanje: US$100 fine (or 30 days in jail).
- Possession of Broncleer: US$100 fine (or 30 days in jail).
This high-profile case serves as a stark reminder that fame does not grant immunity from the law. The Zimbabwean judicial system continues to crack down on substance abuse and reckless driving, prioritizing the safety of the general public.
For the music industry and fans alike, it is a sobering moment highlighting the importance of personal responsibility and the severe consequences of operating outside the legal framework.
