SADC Energy Week 2026: Lighting Up Southern Africa from Victoria Falls

Powering the Region: Zimbabwe’s 2026 Energy Roadmap

Zimbabwe is set to host the SADC Sustainable Energy Week 2026 in Victoria Falls, a landmark event aimed at harmonizing regional power policies and accelerating renewable investment.

Zimbabwe: The Gateway to SADC’s Energy Future

The SADC Vision

Energy and Power Development Minister July Moyo highlighted that SADC ministers are establishing sustainable energy platforms. These focus on harmonizing policies across the region and strengthening the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).

The goal is to expand renewable energy while maintaining essential baseload power from coal and large-scale hydro schemes.

The Renewable Push

Zimbabwe is prioritizing solar, wind, and waste-to-energy technologies. Under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), the country targets an increase in non-hydro renewable energy to 27% of the total energy mix.

"When Zimbabweans save energy, it is the same as generating more electricity," – Minister July Moyo.

Critical Infrastructure

Major work is advancing on transmission lines under the SADC-wide interconnector programme. This includes a corridor linking Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, and Namibia, enabling the evacuation of power to the DRC and beyond.

Mega-projects on the horizon include Batoka Gorge, Devil’s Gorge, and the Inga Dam, which could collectively generate over 40,000 MW.

Open for Business

Zimbabwe has liberalized its energy sector to attract investors. Benefits include reduced licensing fees, guaranteed Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), and national project status for major energy works.

The Government now guarantees the externalization of dividends and loan repayments to ensure a secure environment for foreign investment.

Domestic Impact

While national electricity penetration is at 62%, the Government is prioritizing rural areas, aiming to electrify every primary school and clinic this year. Net-metered solar contributions have already reached 74 MW, with 100 MW more expected.

The SADC Sustainable Energy Week 2026 will serve as a platform to unpack Zimbabwe's Energy Compact for local and foreign investors.
