Attempted Murder in Sandton: Chatunga Mugabe’s High-Stakes Day in Court

From the Blue Roof to the Dock

The dramatic legal saga of Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe continues to unfold in South Africa as he prepares for his Alexandra Magistrate’s Court appearance.

From Blue Roof Royalty to Hyde Park Handcuffs: The Fall of Chatunga Mugabe

Chatunga grew up in the iconic Blue Roof residence in Borrowdale, Harare. As the son of the late Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, his upbringing was one of unparalleled luxury and political significance. However, at 28, the former "first son" finds himself in a starkly different environment—the South African justice system.

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe was arrested following a violent incident at a high-end Hyde Park residence last week. He currently faces a serious charge of attempted murder linked to the shooting of a 23-year-old employee at the property.

Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that while a cartridge was recovered at the scene, the investigation remains high-stakes as detectives piece together the events of that night.

A central mystery continues to haunt the case: The missing firearm. Police have yet to locate the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting. This has led to rumors of an additional charge of defeating the ends of justice.

The missing weapon is a critical hurdle for both the prosecution and the defense as the matter heads to the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.

Chatunga’s lawyer, Jason Saus, has indicated that his client remains resilient. Speaking to the media, Saus stated, “My client is in high spirits; we visited him several times this weekend.”

The defense maintains they have not been formally notified of the secondary charge regarding the missing firearm. Saus emphasized the need for caution to avoid compromising the ongoing police investigation.

"We do not have a choice, we have to do what we need to do," Saus said, as the legal team prepares for the upcoming court appearance.
