A Legacy That Lives Forever
From the early 1980s, Nicholas Zakaria rose to become one of the most influential musical figures in Zimbabwean history. His mastery of the guitar, storytelling ability, and unique Sungura sound made him a national treasure. He taught, mentored, inspired, and built a legacy that stretched far beyond music.
Madzibaba’s music shaped weddings, gatherings, family celebrations, and national culture — a soundtrack to Zimbabwean life.
A Journey Rooted in Dedication
Born in 1956, Zakaria discovered music early and played guitar from the age of eight. Before establishing his iconic Khiama Boys, he performed with the Green Mangoes and the Vhuka Boys. In the 80s, he formed the Khiama Boys and later mentored Alick Macheso, who went on to become a giant in his own right after forming Orchestra Mberikwazvo in 1997.
Albums like Munongedzo (2006), Mbuva Yeupenyu (2006), Chewa Hits (2011), and Mashoko (2013) remain timeless pillars of Sungura excellence.
A National Treasure, A Cultural Icon
Madzibaba Zakaria’s influence stretched beyond the microphone. He raised artists, revived careers, and built pathways for countless young musicians. His humility, calm nature, and consistency made him a beloved father figure in the arts community.
To Zimbabwe and Malawi — his ancestral home — he was not just a musician, but a symbol of cultural pride.
A Sound That Defined Generations
Zakaria’s artistry blended deep storytelling, cultural reflection, and melodic mastery. His signature guitar licks became templates for Sungura music. He crafted songs that spoke to love, struggle, family, spirituality, and everyday life — themes that resonated across generations.
His music was more than entertainment — it was wisdom, laughter, healing, and identity expressed through sound.
Values That Built a Legend
Madzibaba Zakaria lived a life guided by humility — choosing peace over fame, purpose over ego. He mentored without seeking credit, shaped others without demanding praise, and remained grounded despite being a national icon.
He was called “Senior Lecturer” for a reason — he taught life, music, discipline, and character.
In Loving Memory
The Zakaria family confirmed his passing with deep sadness, and Zimbabwe joins in mourning a man whose voice, guitar, and wisdom touched millions. Mourners are gathered at House 21163, Unit A Extension, Chitungwiza, paying their respects to a father, leader, and cultural luminary.
Though he is gone, his music will forever echo in our homes, our hearts, and our celebrations.
Rest in power, Madzibaba Zakaria. Your legacy will never fade.
